MARCH 2025: Purchase of further land on the Tayvallich peninsula

TheTrust is delighted to have acquired further land within the former Tayvallich Estate from Highlands Rewilding. The land comprises two blocks – “the Isles” and “Central Tayvallich” – that were split off from the rest of Barrahormid when we purchased the Estate in 2024 , but historically have always been part of the farm.

The Isles comprises the five islands to the South West of Carsaig Bay – Eilean Dubh, Eilean Traighe, Eilean nan Coinean, Eilean Fraoich and Leth Sgeir, and Central Tayvallich comprises the strip of land between the public road down the peninsula and Linne Mhuirich.

These areas include further important habitats including a former arctic tern colony on the islands, marsh fritillary habitat and coastal marsh along Linne Mhuirich, and An Grianan or “the puddle” noted for its wildfowl including 1% of the UK’s whooper swan population in the autumn. The land adds parts of a further two SSSI’s to the Trust’s holdings which already encompass two other SSSI’s and an SAC which shows the importance of the area for wildlife and nature.

JUNE 2024: Purchase of the Barrahormid Estate

The Barrahormid Trust is delighted to have acquired part of the Tayvallich Estate from Highlands Rewilding. Our aims as a charity are to restore and protect in perpetuity the unique natural environment in this area including Celtic rainforest, fen and species-rich grassland, whilst providing opportunities for local repopulation and employment.

Landscape scale restoration will be a centuries long process and we hope the extended management agreement we have entered into with HRL will serve as a model for ecological conservation and restoration with community benefit in Scotland.
